Unless you are a hobbit hiding in a tree, you, like the rest of us, have a very hard time unplugging from technology in the name of self-care. In a previous article, my aim was to help you choose self-care over more time doom-scrolling.
Since I wrote that, I forgot all of the points I made and technology got out of hand in my own life once again and I had to go back to basics to reign myself in. Here is the simple adjustment I made recently:
Check personal emails, texts and cell phone three times a day- in the morning after I’ve exercised and meditated, at lunch, and after work.
Then I don’t check again until the next day and turn off all alerts so I can have a peaceful evening. I cannot believe what a huge difference this has made to my overall health and well-being. It has greatly reduced my stress, improved my mood and helped me be more mindful and in the moment with whatever task needs my immediate attention.
Lastly, if you’re still feeling stuck and don’t know where to start in taking control of technology, the Center for Humane Technology has some wonderful tips in their “Take Control Kit“. Here are some of the areas they can help you with:
Turning Off Notifications
Removing Toxic Apps
Eliminating Outrage from Your Diet
Being Compassionate
Setting Boundaries
Remembering the Positive
